Let’s refresh ourselves on the simplest definition of coaching; then I want you to consider where you can apply it with your staff, colleagues and even clients.
Coaching is helping someone get absolute clarity on where they are now, absolute clarity on where they want to be in the future, then working with them to co-create a plan of how to get from here to there.
The future doesn’t have to be way off in time, it may be the immediate future, five minutes from now.
Often people know where they are now, yet do not express it with clarity.
When you coach someone of getting absolute clarity and the gap between here and there is really clear, their motivation and desire to change will dramatically increase.
Deciding to change is the essential first step.
I often hear people say “Ah! But change takes time”
Not true. Achieving a future outcome may take time.
Deciding you need to change may take time.
The actual change is instantaneous if you break it down to specific behaviors. A bigger change may happen over time, and the commencement of the change is instantaneous!
Remember the old story about the 4 stockbrokers having a liquid lunch in a bar. Three decide to go back to work. How many are left?
Deciding to do something and actually doing it are not the same thing.
