In the last session we raised the issue of making the post-retrenchment organization more efficient. And reducing the de-motivators.
Of the three sources of de-motivation, environment and aspirations are important here.
First develop and communicate your vision of how the organization can be better. In telling your people this it is critical you state the desired outcome and how you will measure success.
Check they understand what you want.
Then get them to examine the processes they work with, and the links between their area and others.
Change may be required in both. This is an opportunity to improve how things are done and to break down any silos between teams.
Keep a clear focus on the outcome and ensure everyone has visibility of the improvements as they happen.
Decide on the measure of success, record it and make it highly visible.
Let everyone know they are making progress week by week. Celebrate success, give regular, public, positive feedback on what is done well.
Finally, do not confuse financial measures of success with the desired outcome of being better at what you do for your customers.
That is how an economic crisis gets started.
