Today I would like to engage you on a different aspect of Leadership. Self Awareness.
As I have mentioned before, I cannot recommend too highly that every leader reads “Leadership and Self Deception”.
As Newton said, “Action and Reaction are equal and opposite”
If you want a different reaction from people, change yourself.
If you see behavior from others around you that is different from what you want then first ask: Is there anything in my behavior that is causing or contributing to that behavior?
Is there anything I could do differently that will instigate change?
Another great insight is to check whether your perception of how you are matches those of people around you.
You will recall times when you have had an email from someone which raises you to fury, then you discover that it was not meant the way you interpreted it?
This happens because email tends to encourage us to hurry and use different language. We tend not to put as much care into the words we use which often leads to the message sounding very different to what we actually meant, or would say to the person face to face.
Organizations today frequently adopt 360 feedback tools to give leaders input and raised awareness of how other see them.
There are differing opinions on 360 tools in terms of their value. Some love them, some hate them.
Dangers of a 360, if not properly administered, can lead to rejection of the input and creating a worse situation than originally existed.
I have know clients who have stopped doing 360 because after a few times, some people will adopt “360 buddies”. In other words, selecting respondents who will give you a good report.
The two extremes often happen when 360 is used in conjunction with an annual appraisal. I believe it should never be used this way.
The valid use of such tools is in complete confidence to enable an individual to get greater self awareness.
So remember Action and Reaction. If you ever get a 360, stop before you react. Remember their perception is just their perception. Ask yourself how you can use that information to raise your self knowledge and improve.
