I am often asked for my definition of a good leader.
Manager is the role
Leadership is the style
Performance Coaching is the skill
For me, a good leader is one who has a vision of how things will be in the future and can tell you exactly what the measures of success are.
A good Leader knows how to clearly communicate what that future looks like.
A good leader knows the job of leadership is to deliver results through others.
A good leader must spend time developing their direct reports, connecting their entire unit to the rest of the organization and beyond and finally spend time in strategic thinking.
If you are overworked and being the key problem solver to your people, who is looking at the horizon?
Who is thinking about immediate and future changes in the economic environment and how that affects the structure and activity of your team?
Remember, change is the only constant. Books have been written in recent years analyzing and praising excellent companies, many of whom no longer exist today.
If you are not making time to watch the horizon, who is?
Things change, and rapidly.
Many years ago there was a quote from an employee of a shipping line. He said “Not even God himself could sink this ship”
Yes, the Titanic.
