We talked about the power of getting comfortable with silence and truly listening to what your people are saying.
Let me give you a real example of something I experience on every one of our workshops.
On day four, having learned all the coaching skills and done some initial practice, a senior leader who was participating in the program came in very excited. “I went back to the office last night” he said.
“As usual one of my guys came up to me to ask a question about some problem he had.
Normally we stand up in the main area and I download my advice to him.
Yesterday I thought about what I had learned and said, “Let’s grab a room”,We went into a private office and sat down. I asked him what he wanted to talk about and just focused on listening.
Occasionally I asked a question then listened again.
Interestingly he talked about several things, not just one. We spent about 15 minutes together then he went off.
Half an hour later he sent me an sms and then a longer email in the late evening saying how much he appreciated our chat and the time I had given him.
I was blown away. Chat? He did all the talking. All I had done was listen! He solved his own problem.
I am never going back to my old habit of “being the expert”. That was a real shock to see how well these skills work.”
